Panasonic DMP BD80 Features

The DMP-BD80 is Panasonic’s current top-end Blu-ray player, fully equipped with the most comprehensive range of features ever seen on a Panasonic player.

The Panasonic DMP-BD80 has a slick and contemporary design, with the form factor of a standard DVD player. The external appearance of the DMP BD80 is comparable to that of the step-down model, the DMP BD60, but is 5mm taller. The build quality is robust and the display readout is easy to discern against the reflective fascia and black finish.

The DMP BD80 has an flip-up panel on the front of the player, behind which are the USB and SD card slots that can be used to play back digital media, and because the DMP BD80 is BD Live compatible an SD card with a capacity of at least 1GB is required to store web downloads.

The rear of the DMP-BD80 has the customary connections and outputs found in Panasonic Blu-ray players, including the HDMI and multichannel analogue outputs, component, composite, stereo audio and optical/coaxial digital audio outputs, plus an Ethernet port. The Panasonic DMP-BD80 is packed with loads of improvements developed in combination with Panasonic Hollywood Labs. These picture processing features have already shown themselves to be a massive success on the Panasonic DMP BD60.

The most important DMP BD80 features in the image processing department are the P4HD and PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus, which are designed to augment all the core picture elements such as colour, contrast and detail, while P4HD also handles the mundane video tasks like upscaling, 3:2/2:2 cadence detection and diagonal processing. All this technological wizardry is made possible by the UniPhier single-chip solution, also allowing the DMP-BD80 to consume less power than previous models.

DMP BD80 - Audio Features

The Panasonic DMP-BD80 certainly delivers on the audio processing front as well. The DMP BD80 can decode Dolby TrueHD, DTS HD Master Audio, Dolby Digital Plus and DTS HD and output any of them as a bitstream or uncompressed PCM via HDMI.

When it comes to multimedia support, the Panasonic DMP-BD80 performs just like your standard DVD player - it handles DivX, MP3 and JPEG from DVD, CD and USB, while via SD card you can play AVCHD, MPEG-2 and JPEG files.

Another compeling audio feature in the DMP-BD80 is the addition of 7.1-channel analogue audio outputs. This appeals to those of you who have older AV receivers who want to experience the high res delights of Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio. The unit decodes these formats into uncompressed PCM without compromising their sound quality, and outputs them as analogue signals from these ports. The BD80 also features better-quality audio circuitry to previous models.

An eye-catching feature of the Panasonic DMP-BD80 is Viera Cast which is much more than a gimmick, giving you access to online content at the touch of a button. If you are a YouTube regular then there's loads of laughs to be had watching clips on your living room TV.

An additional DMP-BD80 feature is a playback information window that can be accessed at the same time as watching a movie, showing all the facts about the current disc. The information includes the native resolution and frame rate of the source content, the HDMI output format, the video/audio codecs and bitrates used, plus the current HDMI audio settings.
